Less Weight, but Earlier Death

194.4. That was my health screening weight today. So I should be ecstatic. Except that I'm dying. My cholesterol is high, my triglycerides are high, my blood sugar is slightly high (although that might not be an accurate reading since I didn't know you weren't supposed to drink alcohol for 48 hours beforehand..whoops). I'm obese.

The only good news: my blood pressure is good and I don't smoke. The "good" part of the conversation was a little short.

As usual,  I get the hottest, most fit guy there as my counselor. So as I sweat and squirm in my gluttonous embarrassment, this hottie tries to very non-judgementally tell me that I'm a fat sloth with a life-span of a fruit fly.

I'm going to go eat a brownie.

What would Jesus drink?

I'm at 195.6, so I'm feeling super about being able to maintain that to my May 18th health screening, despite the fact that Mat's parents are coming in for Mat's graduation and there will be drinking and festivities all week. Then it's Mother's Day and calories don't count then. Then I go to Milwaukee--I can probably be BETTER then; but we'll have to see. I managed to whip step class today and have been thinking about what steps I can do this month to proactively be thinking about my weight all the time. So I've decided to make a change I'm calling "What would Jesus drink?" I did a quick scour of the bible and was unable to find any reference in any version of Jesus drinking Diet Coke, cranberry juice or beer so I've chosen to limit my liquid intake for this month to things he DID drink so that I can lose weight AND be more like Jesus at the same time...good for the body and soul. So my commitment to the month of May is to only drink water and wine. Which come to think of it, might be really hard to do given that I'm going to Milwaukee, but I suppose since Carter will be with me, SOMEONE should be able to drive...

Also, my little flower bed is coming together nicely and helping me burn calories. While I could do without the "dirty" aspect, I regretfully believe that it's hard to plant things without dirt, so I'm resigned to dealing with it. I am, however, drawing the line at bees. If I get stung by a bee or a bee-like insect in the course of my gardening, I will set it on fire (the flower bed, not the bee....)

Mini-goals this week include watching my liquid intake and exercising at least 4 days this week. I can't make promises about my food intake...my mother-in-law is SUCH a good cook. I hope all of you are also working towards your goals, whatever they are!

Why Carter is responsible for my weight and why I might beat down some old ladies this week:

It's been awhile since my last post. I figured that I'm doing this out of accountability and motivation--therefore, I shouldn't wait until I have something witty and awesome to say; I should be blogging regularly. I know it's hard for some of you to believe there are chunks of time when I have nothing witty to say, but you're about to learn that it's true.

Today we're going to blame my (holding steady at 199) weight on Carter. There are many great articles on how much sleep affects weight loss (blah blah blah something about cortisol blah) and since Carter isn't letting me HAVE any sleep, clearly I am unable to lose weight. I can assure you that my plateau is NOT a result of the Skittles I may or may not have eaten last Friday. I was unable to find a medical journal article that specifically linked Skittles to weight gain.

My new Fitness Magazine came this weekend and had some really good motivational articles in there this month. One of them was on the importance of keeping up a "diet" for at least 4 weeks because that's how long it takes for your mind to start considering a lifestyle habit. So they have week by week suggestions on how not to lose your focus. In week 3, we are to be as competitive as possible. As in: try to beat strangers to the door at the mall, see if you can walk faster or climb more stairs than the person next to you, etc. So I envision myself in competition mode, jumping over strollers, pushing old ladies out of the way and possible laughing at strangers and cheering as I shoot past them. That particular piece of advice could do some real damage if put in the wrong hands.

I did buy 400 pounds of dirt this weekend and am hoping to get in some serious planting tonight and tomorrow. I'm really excited about trying to get a head start on my physical goal (5 pounds by May 18th) BEFORE Mat's parents get up here for graduation. For those of you who don't know my in-laws, they are French. French= gourmet cooking and wine. Lots and lots of both. Plus we're going to eat for Mat's graduation party. Then we're following up those indulgences with a little "going to Milwaukee to tour some breweries with "Maybe Almost Sister". Mat has decided he'll babysit that night so me and "MAS" can go out alone, which means I'm going to get drunk. SO I'm planning ahead to the alcohol and sumptousness and just finished my Kashi bar and yogurt for lunch.

Also I went jeans shopping and for the first time, did not want to kill myself with a dull spoon afterwards. I dropped a size!!!!

The only upside to Carter's crib tantrums is that I'm so sleepy, I go to bed at like 8. Which means I can't stay up all night eating. So there's that. Hope everyone is having a good week.

You may refer to me as Professor "under 200"

Because I am! I am 199.6. I am feeling good about my goal of 195 by my work physical since that includes Mat's graduation and a trip to Milwaukee with my family, my brother and "Almost Maybe Sister". Since everyone involved with the Milwaukee trip is a reader of this blog, I will assume that someone will say "Hey, let's NOT go get Taco Bell since it's 3am...". Since Carter is coming with us to Milwaukee, I might even take the babysitting duty and let the new graduate (also known as the husband) go out all night! But let's not get ahead of ourselves...

This weekend doesn't hold too much temptation since Mat is working pretty much straight through the weekend. Also, I'm going jeans shopping today, so I'm assuming the <200 high I have right now will be decimated by the "crap I can't squeeze into these like I thought I could" feeling in about 6 hours...but it should keep me from eating pie or pizza or whatever.

Shout-out to "Books & Yarn" for the awesome sushi experience yesterday. I'm glad you're my friend.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I've sent this to almost everyone, but just in case, watch this 90-second video of Carter reading to himself. It'll give you warm fuzzies: Carter Likes to Read

I have so much to say, but I don't wanna

I'd like to start with a photo. I am so pleased that my double chin will be featured on my company's intranet site this week.

I had a terrible weekend weight-wise. I mean "Hurricane Katrina, fingers covered in Burger King grease, sat on my fat butt with Doritos and spent my spare time napping" kind of weekend. This is not a small slip-up. This is major sabotage. SO I came in jazzed up to get some motivation from the winner of the "At Home" contest from Season 8's Biggest Loser (Rebecca Meyer). It didn't work because she sucks as a public speaker. However, someone I really admire said to me recently "you have to start over everyday with exercise". While that's kind of depressing and mentally exhausting, she was right. So I am, grudgingly, back on the wagon.  My new goal is 195 by May 18th. That is my health screening day and a perfectly do-able goal. It's not even a stretch goal. I want SO badly just to actually achieve a goal.

And I really need to hold myself accountable to my menus. I've been feeding Carter pretty well when he's willing to eat his damn peas (I only found 3 in his diaper last night, so I have to assume those are accidental peas-in-the-pants), but there have been far too many nights I've binged on whatever I can find. Mostly b/c I'm too tired to cook once I get munchkin down and the house semi-clean. But too bad, self! We're cooking from now on!

I mean, seriously, this is ridiculous. I hate not looking forward to blogging. I hate standing before all of you and having to admit that the scale isn't going the right way. I hate hate hate not being able to fulfill my promises to you or to myself. I know you would all like to see some progress, so I am going to try my BEST to give it to you. In some sort of disciplined fashion. Starting now. Because there is nothing worse than following someone's blog who isn't inspiring you and just gives Debbie Downer reports. Well, except maybe poop in the tub. That's pretty bad too.

Great Easter Weekend...and some philosophy about being fat.

I step on the scale Saturday morning and find...200.4!!! Hooray, I'm so close. I worked out during the weekend, I ate well (with the exception of a taco my husband forced in my mouth last night), and I feel really good. My clothes are fitting better, I'm getting a good amount of sleep and I'm clearly stronger. Everything is awesome...until I get pics this morning from last week's baby shower. Who is that person with the belly and the enormous thighs wearing my clothes? Why can't I reconcile the picture of HER with the picture of ME in the mirror? And...I come crashing back to earth.

So it turns out, it's easy to get caught up in the weight loss positives (which are very important and should not be minimized in one's psyche) and lose a little of the reality that while I have lost 25 pounds, I am still fat. Just because I feel like a supermodel b/c my clothes are fitting loosely, that doesn't mean I am not still a long way from my goal. And seeing pictures proves it. So does shopping for jeans.

I read this weekend that often, people will point out their deficiencies before other people have time to notice them. It's sort of like acknowledging them to someone else to make them aware of YOUR awareness about it so it's not the proverbial elephant in the room. I thought pretty hard about whether or not I do that, because I'm pretty upfront about my size. However, I've come to the conclusion that's not what I'm doing. I acknowledge my size because, unlike being smart/dumb, witty/boring, talented/not, one's weight is entirely visual to the outside world. I acknowledge it because doing so doesn't change my reality. Not talking about the fact I am fat does not make me thin. So when I say to people, "I just cannot believe I hauled my fat butt up the mountain/stairs/curb", I'm not using self-deprecating humor as a defense mechanism. I truly am just surprised that I was able to do it. Hiking to Machu Picchu is a great example of this. I wasn't trying to be humorous b/c there wasn't much funny about that trip, I really am just in awe that I'm alive.

However, I also gave some thought to how other people might perceive/react to my realist version of the world. I suppose a lot of people really don't know what to say when I refer to my weight because social norms don't really encourage people to:
1) heartily agree with me "Yes, you are fat, good for you for noticing!"
2) run away without saying anything or
3) disagree on something that is so obvious as to make the listener seem blind or retarded. So usually people just sort of mutter, "oh Suzanne.." and then laugh nervously.

I haven't decided what to do with this yet. In the meantime, please let me say the following: I am fat. Yes I am. But I am working on it and I do not believe it is what defines me. I am also: smart, witty, loyal and a good wife, friend and mother. So if you readers feel uncomfortable with my proclamation and do not want to agree heartily (which you can absolutely do with no fear of retaliation), feel free to compliment me on any one of my awesome features listed above. Problem solved.

A birthday shout-out to my friend "Stampy".  Hoping to have good news for everyone that does NOT begin with a "2" at the next weigh-in sometime this week. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of Carter from yesterday:

Take That Super Sculpt!

I made it through another insane instructor with perky breasts and tight glutes. Hmmm, gramatically that sentence is ambiguous, so let me clarify that it is the INSTRUCTOR that has the perky breasts/tight glutes...not me. I'm sure that was being called into question.

Little Bit did the class with me. I asked her for a quote since she thought the class was also really challenging, but it turns out she's not nearly as witty and funny as I am, so none of her quotes were good enough. I respect my readers and won't subject y'all to crappy quotes.

The votes so far seem to be overwhelmingly for Weight Watchers in Phase II. I concur. I do love tracking things in Excel spreadsheets and the point system resonates with me for that reason. Here is a short list (not exhaustive) of other things I currently or recently track in Excel:
1. Christmas card list (given and received over a trailing 5 year period)

2. Each flavor of baby food Carter has tried with weekly menu (yes, he tried EVERY SINGLE Gerber and Earth's Best flavor so that he will have a sophisticated palette).

3. Household finances (there are actually 10 associated worksheets for this)

4. Carter's weight, ounces of milk, % formula and interactive charts, daily for six months

5. Books I'm reading, have read, want to read (7 worksheets)

6. Household dates (exterminator, dentist, vet, carpet cleaner, etc)

Neurosis not withstanding, the point system DOES seem compelling. Perhaps I could link to my excel document somehow and you could all follow along! Hooray!

Not to goal, but still motivated

So after poor husband had to go out at 8:45 on the 31st to get an obscure scale battery, I was ready for my weigh-in on April 1. I did NOT drink the proposed wine the night before and I did NOT order the proposed brick-oven, garlic and pepperoni with basil pizza. And the result.... 202.2.
Yes, that is not to my (very aggressive) goal of <200 by April 1, but I feel really good about it. That is, 23 pounds less than I weighed at my max (ex-pregnancy)...therefore I have lost 10% of myself. Basically, I have lost Carter from my body literally and now also figuratively. This blog is really helping my choices and completing motivating me to push through. Also, since I can move my legs again from Monday's workout, I have foregone step to meet my adversary face to face again. Super Sculpt (emphasis on "Sculpt", not on "Super" like I originally assumed). Little Bit is going to go with me and I'm really excited to try a different instructor's class.

Carter news: Carter became a Canadian today. He is now officially a dual citizen and therefore if America gets bombed too much or we go broke from the healthcare bill or whatever, we have a plan B. He's also learning Portugese at daycare, so that's awesome.

Family news: Carter and I are headed to Texas May 29-June 5th. If you want a piece of me and you are not 1) family 2)a hiring manager 3) paying for dinner, please line up and I will try VERY hard to see everyone.

Meanwhile, when I get to 195, I'm going implement Phase II. I am considering one of the following: lengthening my workout, Weight Watchers, Other. So dear readers, please comment or email me with your vote on what I should do 7 pounds from now to ensure that I continue to be motivated and to lose weight.

Nobody Likes You, Monday.

So after a glorious weekend of egg-hunting, wagon rides and sunshine, I step hopefully on the scale this morning. Now I admit, I didn't work out (unless pulling 70 pounds of toddler in a wagon for 2 miles or running after 12 toddlers during an egg hunt count), BUT I also didn't binge or eat totally stupidly.

What do I get for my hard work and willpower? What is my payoff for living a healthy and active lifestyle that I can maintain? 2 pounds. AN ADDITION TO MY FAT BUTT OF 2 POUNDS.

Generally this is where I'd add a string of expletives venting my frustration and thoughts about where those two pounds can go. But since we're close to Easter, I'll skip it and say...that sucks.

So upwards and onwards through the discouragement. I'm working out 6 times this week (even though I said that last week...) and I'm going to really lay off the diet soda (water retention) and make friends with water. The bagels, donuts and candy from the egghunt are safely out of the house and I have a healthy, nutritious menu planned for this week. Maybe I'll also have to get a lung or a kidney or something removed this week and therefore still make my goal weight....even though it's 5.3 pounds away.

Some administrative notes:
Birthday shout-outs for the week:  Hubby (3rd) & "Maybe Someday Sister" (1st).

TO "Stop it": I called you a hoarder, not a whore...now your facial expression makes sense.

Also, now that Lent is over, I can drink alcohol. Yet I'm not going to go get plastered just because I CAN...well, not tonight anyway. And for those Catholics in the audience that insist Lent is through Easter, MY LENT is 40 days because that's how long Jesus was tempted in the desert. And I want to be like Jesus. And also because I want to be able to drink on Mat's birthday.

Why none of my co-workers could work with addicts

It was really terrible. I was jones-ing for a jelly bean. I mean I NEEDED it. I couldn't work, I couldn't talk, I just wanted a SWEET JUICY STARBURST JELLY BEAN. But alas, the sweet juiciness was not to be had. Were my co-workers interested in getting to the root of my irrational need for a jelly bean? Not at all. There were however, some interesting different reactions:

"Never Sleeps" wouldn't give me one. Neither would Little Bit. They were firm. They didn't really care, but they were firm. So they get 4 out of 5 stars for crisis management. However, I still would not recommend they ever work in a drug rehab facility because neither of them was interested in my mental state, just in the fact that I didn't know where said jelly beans were hidden.

Miss Kitty gets 0 stars. In fact, Miss Kitty should have stars taken away for her reaction to my plight. What does Miss Kitty say when I ask for a measly TWO awesome jelly beans (total calorie intake: approximately 15)? Miss Kitty says, "Here, take this 75 calorie chocolate truffle instead". Damn you Miss Kitty. Damn you and your scrumptous random chocolate. (Yes, I ate it. It was great).

I Heart Gordmans decides she's going to help me. This is an interesting case because I think I Heart Gordman's has the best capacity for understanding how to attack a "fix" in moderation. She suggested I have two jelly beans only and agreed to help me (with the implied understanding that she would wrestle me to the ground if I tried to get more than two out of that bag). However, she totally botched the delivery of the package to me BY EATING THE JELLY BEANS HERSELF once they were in her possession. I do not believe this was preconceived. 2.5 stars for I Heart Gordmans. Because I can't judge her for eating the yumminess that was in her hands.

So as I sit here today, jelly-bean-less, it is concerning to me that I freaked out over candy yesterday. I am worried I may have a problem. A problem that clearly my co-workers are not equipped to handle. Idid a little research on candy addiction and it turns out to be real (sort of). There is even an iPhone app!

"Addicted to Candy". I've copy/pasted from the website (apparently the maker of the app originally designed it with drugs, but I guess Apple wouldn't let them use it...so they went with a more ubiquitous, but no less dangerous, item).

The premise of Candy Wars is that 30 years into the future candy has gone the way of cocaine and been banned. So you must work the streets and sell brownies, sour tarts and sugar sticks so addicts can get a fix for their sweet tooth. Prohibition 3: Candy Wars is a very simple game but does what it is supposed to do well. It is a reworked, touch-screen friendly remake of Drug Wars, which was written for DOS about 25 years ago. It stays true to the simplistic interface and delivers some addicting fun.

The premise of Candy Wars is pretty simple — buy low and sell high. The interface involves switching between a screen where you can buy or sell the illegal candy substances and a subway menu that lets you travel to different parts of New York. As supply and demand goes there are different prices for the candy throughout the sections of New York. So buy candy cheaply and sell it for a profit to grow your business. Getting good at the game requires a combination of knowing where to buy the candy on the cheap and finding the right places to sell for a higher profit. You also need to develop enough cash and supply to deal with how the market fluctuates. These can be quite rapid so sometimes it is worth making the sale before checking all the other areas for the best price.

Some wrenches are thrown in to your plan through loan sharks and Food and Drug Administration agents. A pop-up message will warn you that loan sharks are demanding repayment or that you are being chased by the FDA. Charming the agents with some of your pixie dust or hiding in an alley can avert the confiscation of your stash.

I can't think of a game I would be better at. Business combined with my own understanding of candy addiction would make a "candy lord" in the Midwest. Except I'd be addicted to my own product....Oh well, maybe when they come out with "Addicted to Mushrooms"....I would rock at that game.

Question of the Hour

This has nothing to do with weight loss. Nothing at all. But I need an outlet for this....

Little Bit just asked me "Do you think Pamela Anderson's breast are fake?"

While I could not think of an appropriate response to that, "I heart Gordmans" had a response which is about as close as I can get..."sweet, sweet, Jesus".

It's also important that you know Little Bit has a PhD.

The fate of our planet is not looking good.

Sabotage

This blog is going to be serious. For those of you who read this blog for entertainment and not necessarily to avidly follow my weight-loss journey, cheering from the sidelines, you can stop reading. Today we're going to address self-sabotage and why we (collectively meaning people trying to lose weight) often engage in this behavior. How many times have I gotten SO close to a goal just to kill it with a gallon of ice cream, some tacos, a burger...or all three? This behavior, folks, is much more common that I was once led to believe. While I realize I have a sniveling, whiny child in my soul in place of strong, iron-clad willpower, I think most people at some time in their life self-sabotage themselves from their goals--whatever those goals may be. What is it about ourselves that makes us stop when we get close? I think it's fear. Fear of what? No idea. I'm not scared to have a tight, perfect ass and a rock hard stomach. I'm not scared of a cholesterol level of 150. Maybe I'm scared to change my self-identity? Since I can remember, I was the least good-looking of my group of friends, but had a rock-star personality to make up for it. (Note: my friends are H-O-T, so by saying I'm the least good looking, I'm not saying I wasn't cute. It's kind of like being the dumbest person in Mensa....) So maybe my self-identity is tied to this weight. Or more probably, my LIFESTYLE is tied to this weight. If I can't come home with Mat and watch National Geographic with wine and Centro pizza, what will we do instead? What will I do with my hands when I'm not reaching in a bag of chips?

This conversation is stemming from the fact I'm fighting against self-sabotage right now. I can feel myself looking around for something yumm-o to put in my mouth while giving myself an excuse to sit on my fat butt in front of the TV. Recognition, I'm sure, is the first step towards stopping this process.  Having Little Bit as a friend is probably the second since she's great at dragging me (yes, physically, with her ~110-lb frame) out of my cube and into the gym. But how do I make sure I hit my April goal, or any other goal for that matter? I am seeking answers here.

For those of you who have bothered to read this far, I'll give you something to chew on as a reward:

40 is the only number that, in the English language, has all its letters in alphabetical order.

In other news: Carter is at that stage where he likes to bring you things. So by the end of everyday I'm surrounded with toys, shoes, an empty Scope bottle pulled out of the recycling bin, a spoon and about 20 of daddy's CDs which have been pulled off the shelf. Naturally I think this is the most adorable thing ever.

Drawbacks to having a blog...

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
You know what sucks about having a blog about weight loss? Besides being held accountable for everything you eat, every workout and every pound and having to tell the entire world that you still sometimes wear your maternity pants and that you top the scales over 200 pounds? Well, BESIDES that, people that read your blog often complain when something THEY SHOULD BE DOING AS YOUR FRIEND ANYWAY doesn't make it in the blog.

So, here is a blog post that will be emailed to about a dozen people who didn't necessarily want to take time out of their work/gossip/whatever to hear about this, but now will have to so that I am less annoyed when I walk into work and into a pit of dis-satisfaction with Little Bit's "I didn't get mentioned in the blog" attitude.

Last Friday, Little Bit not only kept me from eating an extra slice of pizza, but also dragged me out of my pizza-induced-almost-napping stupor to go work out. And we did. And I got an endorphin rush.

So thank you Little Bit.

In other news that people might actually care about, Carter grabbed an enormous bath towel out of his laundry hamper last night and pulled it into his crib as a blankie. I checked on him after he fell asleep and he was all curled up around this enormous blanket. Guess I should start giving him a blankie to carry around...

Dear readers, have fun and be safe tonight with your St. Patty's debauchery.

Weight this morning: 203.8

Monday. Blah.

Well, the sunshine is out (finally) and it's Spring Break here in Des Moines. What does that mean to you, fellow readers? Probably nothing. Today is just some odds and ends:

So, I didn't exactly work out this weekend. I really only needed to work out once, but stupid Daylight Savings Time sapped all my energy and forced Carter to stay up an extra hour. I did, however, dance to "The Wiggles" and I also walked down the street TWICE.  My lack of motivation may also have had something to do with the SUnday TV situation; I simply cannot resist Tool Academy, Celebrity Apprentice, & Amazing Race. It's like the Trifecta of "Sit On The Couch-ness". But I do paln to work out 6 days this week and I expect you to hold me accountable.

Eureka! Remember how people tell you a lot that exercise gives you endorphins and you have this awesome sense of well-being afterwards and want to cure cancer and save babies? Well, usually, I am too worn out and fat to care about babies and cancer after a workout and always sort of wanted to give a crotch-punch to these endorphin-advocates. BUT FRIDAY I FOUND THEM. They soared through my body, giving me energy and enthusiasm!! I felt like I could run forever (not withstanding the fact I wasn't running in the first place). Yup. It was awesome. Right up until I had to stop early because Mat locked his keys in the car....
So anyway, I'm on a perpetual quest to find these elusive endorphins and recapture the feeling through exercise. Just not today. Because Miss "Can't Work Out Today" wouldn't go with me and I had to skip step because I was working. Which I do now and then.

I have also started keeping a food journal and am limiting myself to 1600 calories per day this week. The food journal is really helping me b/c I don't want to spend too much time logging in two bites of a brownie...it's just not worth it. So really, food logging is a good way to leverage laziness...

Lastly, I want to leave you with Roo's easy:
Grilled chicken w/ corn and avocado salsa
Coat raw chicken breast with mix of lime juice (about 3 Tbs maybe), bit of salt and pepper, and about 2 Tbs of chopped cilantro
Throw chicken on grill

While grilling, make salsa:
About 1 C thawed frozen yellow corn kernels
1 avocado diced
lime juice (maybe about 2 Tbs)
salt (just a pinch)
chopped cilantro (maybe 2Tbs)
Really yummy w/ some black beans on the side garnished w/ cilantro

Yumm-o!

Touche' Step Class, Touche'

I am mentally prepared. I am dressed in a short-sleeve shirt. I am ready.

Susanne the hard instructor: "Since I'm going on vacation right after this class, we're going to mix it up today!!!! Let's turn our steps vertical and do interval training with a lot of power blocks!!!"

Fuck.

But do I miss a beat? Do I collapse in a spasm of death throes or out of  fatigue-inspired clumsiness--NO!!! I prevail, even when 15% of the class walked out in the middle (which I calculated to keep my mind off the burning...)
Yes, I admit there may have been more frequent water breaks than usual and my face may still resemble a skinned tomato, but I finished the class AND it was easier than the last one.

So for all you haters (you know who you are)...you. can. SUCK IT.

Doing it again Friday, without the hard teacher.

Weigh in today: 205.

What a good day!

I come in today and it's waiting for me in my inbox: what I've suspected all along...

What a relief! I'll toast to that! (thanks to Miss Kitty for the link)

In other news, here is a pictue of Carter demonstrating how I felt after the step-class-from-hell yesterday:

Except, clearly, he's better dressed than I was.

Suzy goes to step class

Yes. I am motivated. I am going to step for the first time since November. I am ALSO going to do 10 additional minutes on the elliptical since step is only 35 minutes.

Here is my inner dialouge for the last 35 minutes:

Hmmm, I sure am glad I'm wearing this long sleeve shirt to step class. I am so clever to remember it's kind of cold in the aerobics room. (glances slyly at the other women), no one else is smart enough to wear a long sleeve shirt here, proving my superiority to these people.

Hmm, I see Susanne is teaching today. She's tough. Well, I've taken her before, I'll just have to pace myself. I mean, I've been doing step since I was 12. I was Little Miss Jazzercise for goodness' sake....and NO ONE can take THAT away from me.

(2 minutes)
Oh...that was just the warm up? Seems to be a little fast paced. Well, I can FEEL the fat burning off my body, so this is great. (stop to tie shoe lace)--ugh, that better not happen again. I hate interrupting my workout mojo.
(2 minutes)
Wow, this is a lot harder than I remember. I hate glute lifts; it's very hard to lift my enormous glutes and I should get extra points. But man, it feels great to be working out again...although it's getting kind of warm.
(2 minutes)
Whew--this is officially sucking. We didn't stretch. When are we going to stretch? That's my favorite part. God I'm hot.
(2 minutes)
OMG WHERE AM I?  WHAT'S GOING ON?? AHHHHH!
(2 minutes)
WHY AM I WEARING THIS GOD-FORSAKEN SHIRT?
(5 minutes)
My muscles are shaking, I am really WHAT THE F---
(land on butt. twist ankle slightly. Here comes Susanne running over....are you OK? do you need an icepack?)
No, no, I am fine. I am strong. I can look tough to all these other women wearing their little tank tops... (continue doing routine)
Would it really be inappropriate to ask for an ice-pack for my butt? Yes, it would. Self,  do NOT ask for an icepack...
(1 minute)
Man, that girl's face is flushed a really unnatural shade of red....crap, that's me. The idiot wearing the long-sleeve shirt
(1 minute)
OH GOOD LORD HAVE MERCY ON MY FAT SOUL. THE PAIN, STOP THE PAIN
(1 minute)
ooohhh, maybe my shoelace will come untied? Nope, looks good. Damnit, why won't my shoe lace just UN-TIE???
Susanne: ooohhh, let's do a power block!!!
OH GOD THE PAIN!!! I'm DYING. DYING.

the end. I limp out of class, bruised, beaten and humbled.

Self: Absolutely do not have the energy to walk back to desk. Must die in locker room....
No, must go blog. The people demand it of me.

We'll meet again step class. We will meet again.

Just as soon as I lay down for 3 days and also buy some tank tops.

New Week--Adios 6 pounds.

It's very exciting to get such good feedback about my blog. Where I expecting to hear perhaps "Good God, how do you live with yourself at that weight? I mean, do you worry about sitting in airline seats? Do you get self-concious about ordering dessert at restaurants?", I'm hearing "wow, good job!" and "I have a great recipe for you". So thank you dear readers.

The week started off great. I lost 6 pounds!  To emphasize what this means to me, I did a little research into things that weigh six pounds. Unfortunately, I could only find things that weigh one pound. SO here we go:

I lost the equivalent to:
SIX bags of coffee
SIX shoes
SIX average books
SIX packages of frozen vegetables
ONE QUARTER of Carter
SIX scotch tape dispense model C-38 (tape not included)
ONE five pound barbell AND one shoe

So as you can see, six pounds is quite a bit. That's 2.8% of my body weight for those of you who watch Biggest Loser. Now, I am a little concerned this is a lot of water weight, so stay tuned for next week when we see if I gain weight and fly into a depression that includes listening to Michael Buble and eating Hot Tamales. I did exercise, although not as much as I hoped too. Most of this is attributed to the fact I can't figure out how to get our TV to turn to the DVD mode even though Mat showed me once (which doesn't count because he chose to show me in the middle of Real Housewives of OC when I couldn't possibly be expected to pay attention to him).

One of my audience members whom we'll refer to as "Roo" gave me this link: www.cookinglight.com/5ingredients/ which is awesome b/c they are healthy meals one can make in a short amount of time. Which is good for anyone who has, say, a toddler attached to their leg OR possibly someone who turns into Bitchy McBitchison when her blood sugar gets low. So go check it out.  My co-workers have promised to make me work out again this week a lot and I'm excited to go to step class. I DID also write a menu for the week (whole-wheat rotini with marinara and shrimp tonight, chicken breast tomorrow)., so I'm excited about that. I have been doing great on my eating.

In other, non-weight news, Carter learned to say uh-oh this weekend. This is important as he can now alert us to his behavior. Dropped your bear? uh-oh. Ran your face into the coffee table? uh-oh. Poop in the pants? that right, uh-oh again. It's good to be communicating with Carter; he has a lot to say.

A New Day

Thank you to those who have supported me so far even though my brother is the only person who can figure out how to post a comment (including me....it doesn't work for me either).

I'm feeling pretty good today. And by good I mean the"my ass is burning from dragging it up a steep treadmill incline"  kind of good. So at least I can remind myself that I did indeed work out yesterday.

I've been giving some thought to Carter's food habits. Putting aside his penchant for shoving broccoli into his pants to avoid eating it (at least I hope that is why he's doing it), he's sort of my diet partner. I spend so much time making sure his plate is nutritious, varied, colorful and containing protein/starch/veggie...but yet I don't spend anytime planning what I'm going to eat. Which means most dinners when Mat isn't home consist of:
-the half of the weiner Carter didn't eat
-the quarter banana that Carter didn't eat
-a pudding cup (no sugar double chocolate...awesome)
-another pudding cup later
-then when I'm super hungry, I raid the fridge

So I'm going to start writing menus again for me like I do for Carter. And I'm going to stop eating what's left over on his plate (unless it's vegetables, but apparently those just go in his pants...)

And now, for the big announcement: Today's weight......212

There. I said it. Now you can judge me.

Short term goal: <200 by April 1.
Medium term: 165 by Jennifer's wedding on Sept 18th
Long term: 150

Again, thanks for reading. Someone sent me an email that said "bad decisions make good stories". I can assure you there will be some bad decisions on this journey...we'll see about that stories...

Starting a blog

So I said to myself, "Self, you've been trying to lose weight all your life. You have to do something that will motivate, cajole, convince or embarrass yourself into actually LOSING the weight and keeping it off." So, I'm starting a blog about my weight loss in the hopes that I will give this link to enough people whose opinion I care about that it will make me think twice before I....
1. stuff chips and queso in my mouth in between gulps of strawberry margarita
2. tell Mat that "why yes, it IS a good idea for us to sit on this couch and eat Buffalo Wild Wings...again"
3. eat four bowls of Captain Crunch for breakfast
4. choose to sit down and watch my crappy reality TV instead of getting yelled at by the Jillian Micahel's exercise DVD
5. Yell at my husband (again) for either not being supportive of my weight loss OR judging my weight (depending on whether I'm on the wagon that day or not..which is information he will not have)

So, to the reader, I promise to be brutally honest with you and I will try to make this entertaining. I cannot, however, promise that this blog will only be about weight loss. There may be some of the following:
1. Comments and pictures of Carter (a lot of them)
2. Miscellaneous opinions and rants about (but not limited to): crappy Iowa weather, crappy drivers, co-workers/family members/friends (names will be changed to protect you even when I don't feel like it). Also I might talk about parenting, the past and the future. And possibly cats, politics and religion.

But mostly it will be about my weight loss. So thank you for taking this journey with me. Thank you in advance for your support and patience. Especially if you are my husband.
